Beyond the Spine: How the Nervous System Shapes Pregnancy, Birth, and Early Development
When people hear the words Craniosacral Therapy, they often assume it's simply another type of bodywork. In reality, it's an approach centered on one of the body's most important systems—the central nervous system.
This month, I had the privilege of presenting a continuing education class for the Missouri Midwives Association on how the nervous system, the craniosacral system, and the dural tube influence pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, and early infant development.
Whether you're an expecting parent, a new family, or simply curious about Craniosacral Therapy, understanding these concepts can help you appreciate why gentle, nervous-system-focused care has become an important part of many people's wellness journey.
More Than Bones and Muscles

Our brains and spinal cords are surrounded by protective membranes called the meninges. Together with the cerebrospinal fluid they hold, these tissues form the Craniosacral system.
One important structure within this system is the Dural Tube—a continuous membrane that extends from the base of the skull through the spinal canal to the sacrum.
Because this tissue connects the head, spine, and pelvis, changes in one area can influence another. Pregnancy, birth, injuries, repetitive strain, everyday stress, and deeply held trauma can all affect how comfortably the body moves and adapts.
Craniosacral Therapy uses gentle touch to evaluate and support the body's natural ability to release restrictions and restore balance within this system.
Pregnancy and the Nervous System
Pregnancy places remarkable demands on the body.
As posture changes, ligaments soften, and the pelvis prepares for birth, the nervous system continuously adapts to these physical changes. Many pregnant individuals experience discomfort such as:
Low back or pelvic pain
Neck and shoulder tension
Headaches
Difficulty breathing and relaxing
Increased physical and emotional stress
Craniosacral Therapy is often chosen because of its holistic mind-body-spirit approach, making it a gentle option for supporting both physical comfort and mental/emotional stress relief during pregnancy.
Birth Is a Whole-Body Experience

Birth is one of the most physically demanding events the human body experiences—not only for the parent but also for the baby.
During labor and delivery, both bodies experience significant compression, rotation, pressure, and adaptation.
Most babies transition beautifully without additional support. However, some families choose Craniosacral Therapy after birth when they notice challenges with comfort, body tension, feeding complications, or settling in their newborn.
Likewise, many postpartum parents appreciate having space to address their own physical and emotional demands that accompany birth and recovery while also being a new parent.
Learning Through Touch
One of my favorite moments during the midwives' presentation was guiding participants through a simple palpation exercise.
Rather than simply talking about the nervous system, they had the opportunity to slow down, become present, and experience the subtle motion with their own hands of the Craniosacral system filling and emptying cerebrospinal fluid.
These moments often remind us that healing doesn't always require force. Sometimes the greatest changes begin by learning to listen to what the body is already communicating.
A Gentle Approach for the Whole Family

Craniosacral Therapy is appropriate for people of all ages and life stages because it relies on light, intentional touch rather than forceful manipulation.
At Healing Roots Therapeutic Wellness, sessions are individualized to each person's needs. Some clients seek care for persistent jaw tension, headaches, emotional distress, etc. Others are looking for support during pregnancy, postpartum recovery, or simply a way to calm an overwhelmed nervous system.
Every session begins with listening—to your history, your goals, and ultimately, your body's responses.
Continuing to Learn, Continuing to Serve
One of the things I value most about this profession is that learning never stops.
Presenting continuing education for fellow healthcare professionals was both an honor and a reminder that collaboration benefits everyone—especially the families we serve.
As research into the nervous system continues to grow, so does our understanding of how gentle, patient-centered care can support health and resilience.
Whether you're expecting a baby, navigating postpartum recovery, living with chronic tension, or simply interested in how your nervous system influences your well-being, Craniosacral Therapy offers a thoughtful, gentle approach centered on the body's remarkable ability to adapt and heal.
If you'd like to learn more about whether Craniosacral Therapy is right for you or your family, we'd be happy to answer your questions and help you explore whether it's a good fit for your wellness goals.
